Four: Aki’s Nightmare

Aki woke up from a terrible dream. It receded into his subconscious as quickly as he woke, so by the time he opened his eyes, the only trace left was a groggy discomfort. In the next few seconds, present reality sank in. Aki lay still, blinking his swollen eyelids, studying the folds of the gray cotton shirt covering the body beside him and knowing it was not Luke.

It was Mark, of course. He knew as much from the scent of him, a clean male scent that reminded him of cedar. Mark's hand touched his head and stroked gently.

"How long was I asleep?" Aki asked, his voice rough.

"Just a couple of hours. It's two in the morning."

Aki's lips trembled. "They took him?"

"Yeah."

He closed his eyes and went silent. After a long pause he asked, "Have you seen Ken?"

"He's with Lip."

"He okay?"

"Far as we can tell."

"What about Dylan?"

Mark paused. "He's gone. We don't..."

"What do you mean, gone?"

"He called Kel. He said he...won't be coming back for a while."

Aki took an unsteady breath and released it. At length he said, "I don't think I can do this, Mark."

"What's the alternative?" Mark asked gently.

Aki sobbed. "No. I don’t want to do this, Mark, I’m tired…"

Mark wrapped his arms around Aki, pulling him close, and held him as he wept.

After Aki dozed off again, Mark went downstairs and stepped outside for some fresh air. Seeing Ken sitting on the back porch, he stopped. "Hey," he said softly.

Ken nodded. He cleared his throat softly. "Is he okay?"

Mark put his hands in his pockets, grimacing out over the dark lawn. "I hope so." He glanced at Ken again. "It's late. How long have you been here?"

Ken didn't answer, rubbing his finger against the wooden step.

Mark studied him. Such a strange kid. Then again, for having arrived as a feral child just six months ago, he wasn't that strange. "You wanna see him?"

Ken looked up at him for a moment, then nodded.

"He's upstairs."

Ken stood up quickly and went up the stairs, leaving Mark with a faint, sad smile. He was growing pretty fond of the kid. They all were.

Aki was half-awake when Ken entered, and only opened his eyes when he felt a weight on the edge of the bed. Ken was crouching beside him, his arms folded on the mattress, staring at him with a look unlike his usual blank expression. It was the sharp, wary gaze of a wild animal, and right now it held a twinge of woe. As Aki looked back, Ken tentatively placed his hand on Aki's and squeezed.

Aki's lips trembled. He turned his face and pressed them to Ken's thumb, closing his eyes. He felt two fat tears roll down his cheeks anyway.

"Can I stay?" Ken whispered.

"Yes," Aki choked out, lacing his fingers through Ken's. He was crying again, whispers of sobs. Then he wanted to tell Ken to leave, but he couldn't let go of his hand. "I'm sorry, Ken."

"No," Ken said, and then crawled onto the bed to lie beside him.
